The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) will be conducting Roadcheck 2010, an annual truck safety event conducted by federal, state and local transportation and safety agencies, from June 8-10. Solid waste collection vehicles and transfer-trailers carrying solid waste are subject to inspection as part of Roadcheck.
During last year’s Roadcheck, nearly 73,000 inspections were conducted at over 2,000 locations. About 20% of the vehicles inspected and 4.4% of the drivers were placed out of service – including some garbage trucks! An out-of-service vehicle or driver means lost time and revenue! While this was a decrease from the previous year, it is still too many. The most common violations related to brakes and hours of service.
The annual Roadcheck program is in response to safety concerns associated with trucks. CVSA, which sponsors the program, claims the declining fatality rate for crashes involving large trucks is due, in part, to increased roadside inspections.
NSWMA members and others should prepare for Roadcheck 2010 by making sure their vehicles are ready for inspection, and that drivers possess appropriate paperwork and comply with applicable regulatory requirements, including safety belt laws.
