SUPER BOWL XLVI
Jan 30th, 12
Are you and your workers ready?
The New England Patriots and the New York Giants will play in the Super
Bowl on Sunday, February 5. What does that have to do with safety? All
across the United States, at homes, parties and bars, people will have a drink or
two (or more) while watching the game, and stay up late. This includes the
men and women who handle the trash and recyclables and maintain the trucks.
Drivers and helpers who have to report for work the following day, especially
those who need to start before the sun comes up, should keep their work-related
duties in mind while enjoying the game.
Managers and supervisors should remind workers not to overdo it on Sunday,
are encouraged to personally greet drivers and other employees the Monday
after the game, and monitor their pre-trips, and make sure all workers are fit for
duty.
How employees behave off-the-job can have a dramatic effect on their
productivity and safety while working. Someone who does drugs or is an
alcoholic is a danger to himself, his fellow employees, and customers, and
should not be allowed behind the wheel of a garbage truck. This is true the day
after the Super Bowl – and every other day of the year!
