Welding Safety Issues
Nov 21st, 11
Many welding operations – especially plasma torch machines – can cause serious eye injuries to employees if workers do not wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Many manufacturers and solid waste companies have employees who do welding as part of
their daily operations. Many welding operations – especially plasma torch machines – can
cause serious eye injuries to employees if workers do not wear appropriate personal
protective equipment (PPE). In addition to PPE, welding screens should also be used to
protect other workers and visitors in the welding area. Employees who do welding can be
exposed to UV light which can cause a sun-burn-like condition in the cornea of the eye.
Symptoms include pain, watery eyes, blurry vision and unusual sensitivity to light. Workers
who work near this equipment or who walk through the welding area can also be exposed to
this hazard.
NSWMA and WASTEC recommend that employers review this hazard and consider
welding screens or other appropriate PPE to protect employees and others from this serious
workplace hazard. You may also want to observe your welders to make sure they are using
the PPE properly. Also, make sure that welding areas have signs advising employees and
others about this important safety hazard.
Welding operations also pose a potential fire risk. OSHA requires all movable fire hazards
be removed from the welding area, that fire extinguishers be available, and that welding not
take place in an explosive atmosphere that could cause a combustible event. See OSHA’s
welding rules for additional information. Weld Safely. Every Day.
