Workplace Injuries and Illnesses Declined in 2010
The federal Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) recently released the 2010 data on
workplace injuries and illnesses for employees employees. The news for solid waste
employers and employees is good: The rates for collection and landfill
workplace injuries and illnesses declined as follows:
The rate for collection declined by 13% last year, and is now almost half of
what it was just 10 years ago!
If you want to know how your company is doing compared to the national
averages, these are the rates you should use. If your rates are significantly
above these averages, you should consider what additional steps your company
can take to reduce injuries and illnesses.
The most common injuries for collection employees likely are back and
shoulder injuries associated with lifting waste and depositing it into the back of
the truck, and slips/trips/falls. The most common injuries at transfer stations
and landfills are caused by lifting and slips/trips/falls.
